BACKGROUND:The monument will be built to honor the 65th Infantry Regiment, which was the largest, and longest-standingactive duty military unit in U.S. history, based out of Puerto Rico. The Borinqueneers were originally activatedon June 4, 1920 and participated in World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. During their service,members of the regiment—which also included Mexican-America, African-Americans, Filipinos, VirginIslanders, and other nationalities—were segregated from other service members.
“New Britain has a longstanding tradition of honoring our service men and women,” said Mayor Stewart. “Weare extremely proud of the contributions that the Borinqueneers have made for our country and our City. Theiracts were heroic and their actions should never be forgotten. We hope that this monument will pay tribute totheir dedication to our nation and community.”
In July, the Common Council approved entering into a $280,000 contract with LaRosa Earth Group, LLC ofMeriden to assist in the construction of the monument. Crosskey Architects, LLC of Hartford is assisting withthe architectural and engineering portion of the project. The project is expected to cost $300,000 and will bereimbursed by the State of Connecticut as approved by the state Bond Commission during the 2017 legislativesession. Construction should be complete in October 2017.
