City to Honor Martin Luther King, Jr. with Special Celebration

WHAT: Mayor Erin Stewart, the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities, and othercommunity leaders will hold a citywide celebration on Monday, Jan. 15 to honor the legacy ofcivil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

WHEN:Monday, Jan. 15, 2018 – 12 p.m. 

WHERE: Trinity on Main, 69 Main St., New Britain, Conn.

Featured keynote speaker: Jerrell Hargraves, community leader

BACKGROUND:This event, sponsored by the City’s office of Human Rights and Opportunities, has been taking place for morethan 25 years. The event started out in the early 1980s as something just for city hall employees and has sincegrown to become a wide ranging and inspiring community program.

“It is more important now than ever to set aside time to honor and reflect on Dr. King’s words of action andcompassion,” said Mayor Stewart.

The event will begin at 10:30 a.m. with light refreshments, followed by the program at 11 a.m. A wreath layingceremony at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial—located at intersection of Martin Luther King Drive andStanley Street—will take place at 11 a.m.

The event is free and open to the public.
