2018 Road Sealing Program to get Underway

Public Works Department to crack seal 10 miles of roadway

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

September 18, 2018

NEW BRITAIN—Mayor Erin Stewart and the New Britain Public Works Department announced that theCity’s 2018 Crack Sealing program will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 19 and will involve making repairs to about10 miles of roadway.

Crack sealing is a cost effective maintenance tool for extending the life of roads by filling in cracks in the road, thereby prohibiting water from penetrating into the pavement—which causes erosion and potholes. Motoristsare able to drive on the roadway immediately following the installation of the sealant.

“Taking this proactive approach to maintaining our extensive roadway system lessens the investment requiredto keep roads in good condition. Rather than having them deteriorate and making more extensive costs, wehave instituted a Pavement Management Program that involves inventorying our roads, assigning ratings, andscheduling maintenance in order to improve the condition of our streets,” said Mayor Stewart.

Portions of the following roads will be sealed: Rocky Hill Avenue; East Street; Stanley Street; Veterans Drive;Glen Street; Walnut Hill Park/Grand Street Access; Arch Street; Shuttle Meadow Avenue; Corbin Avenue;Alton Brooks Way; Blake Road; McClintock Street; Concord Street; Miller Street; Albany Avenue; PulaskiStreet; Nash Street; Martha Street; Booth Street; Cross Street; Gold Street; Broad Street; Main Street; andMyrtle Street.

Updates will be added to newbritainct.gov.

The crack sealing program is in addition to the City’s annual paving program. This year, the City paved severalmiles of roadway along portions of 11 streets between July and August.
